Curriculum

The curriculum at St Mary’s Bryanston Square CE Primary School is being developed to furnish our pupils with a depth of knowledge and wealth of skills, which will enable them to be successful in the next stages of their life.

Our aspiration for our children is for them to excel in their learning, striving to be the best that they can be. Through our use of our school’s Christian values we hope that our children become curious, honest and respectful individuals, who flourish in all aspects of their learning.

We provide opportunities to broaden our children’s experiences through activities and experiences that bring subjects to life. These include educational visits, workshops and after-school clubs.

To ensure that everyone at St Mary’s is clear about our expectations of learning we have developed a well-planned curriculum map which builds upon children’s prior knowledge and previous learning. We teach the majority of our subjects discretely, however we make relevant connections where appropriate.

Subject progression maps include the knowledge, skills and vocabulary intended for all our children to learn each term.

We ensure that the core drivers of the curriculum (reading, writing and maths) are deeply embedded for all of our pupils – which in turn allows them to flourish and fully access the wider curriculum enabling them to ASK (Apply their Skills and Knowledge) and therefore become curious learners who strive for excellence!

We believe it is important to support our children in developing personally as well as academically.

Through PSHE we equip our children with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to be healthy, safe and responsible individuals and members of the community. In addition to our daily acts of collective worship and weekly class sessions, PSHE themes and topics are also taught by visitors through workshop sessions.

We make great use of our incredible local area in Marylebone and beyond (including outside London) to further enrich the curriculum through trips and workshops.

We have also formed a number of partnerships with other schools, and with organisations, to ensure the best possible curriculum for our pupils. Last year, these included:

Tri-borough Music Hub, Chelsea Football Club, British Land, Paribas Bank, Lords’ Cricket Ground and Sustrans.

We have a wide range of trips and visits which support our curriculum. This year we welcomed our local Police Officers as part of the Met Police school's programme, Awareness Academy. Every class was able to have a session with the police on wide ranging issues which will help them to be safer in our community. 

The National Curriculum sets out expectations for each key stage, and children’s progress is assessed against these expectations each year. The curriculum for all Church of England Primary schools in England currently includes:

• five ‘core’ subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Religious Education
• seven ‘foundation’ subjects: History, Geography, Art, Music, Design Technology, Computing and Foreign Languages (Spanish – KS2 only)

In addition to these compulsory subjects, we also teach Personal, Social and Health Education through special theme days and by making cross-curricular links.

The curriculum is divided into stages:

• Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes)
• Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
• Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6)
