Personal, Social and Health Education

St Mary’s Bryanston Square Primary School’s  PSHE curriculum aims to equip children with essential skills for life in society now and in the future.

What do we want from our pupils?

  • Our pupils to grow up to be confident, considerate and well-rounded individuals who have respect for themselves and for others.
  • For children to share their own thoughts and opinions with others and understand respect and tolerance for different points of view.
  • For children to develop their identity and self esteem as active, confident members of St Mary’s and in the wider community.
  • Develop skills and attributes to keep themselves healthy and safe
  • To see each and everyone’s value in society and show tolerance and respect of others beliefs, religions and life choices
  • To build positive relationships with other people.

Our curriculum intends to develop the whole child through carefully planned and resourced lessons that develop knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing.  Our school values are at the core of everything we do, they provide a basis for learning every term and are at the heart of our PSHE curriculum.  These are:

  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Forgiveness
  • Feeling Safe
  • Love
  • Curiosity

Our curriculum and resources are fully in-line with the Learning Outcomes and Core Themes provided by the PSHE Association Programme of Study.

We cover three core areas of Healthy and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
Our curriculum fulfils the requirements of the 2020 Statutory Relationships and Health Education*, setting these learning intentions in the context of a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum.

Implementation

How do we deliver PSHE at St Mary’s Bryanston Square?

  • Our PSHE curriculum is taught discreetly on a weekly basis.
  • Connections between other subjects are made where appropriate, which helps to teach knowledge, skills and attributes in real life context.
  • Lessons are taught in a spiral curriculum covering all 6 of our school values and all three core areas of learning through PSHE lessons in each class, every year.  This enables children to recall and build upon previous learning, exploring underlying principles of PSHE education regularly and at a depth that is appropriate for the age and stage of the child.
  • Visitors such as the school nurse and the emergency services compliment our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning
  • Assemblies & Collective Worship are planned to cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school.
  • Lessons are taught in a creative manner, often using approaches such as role-play, discussion and games.  These activities work to build confidence and resilience.
  • All PSHE lessons develop a safe space in the classroom for sharing ideas and listening to others so each child is valued and develops their confidence.

Impact

We firmly believe that a meaningful PSHE curriculum is the key to children becoming confident, considerate and well-rounded individuals.

What is the impact on our children as a result of our PSHE teaching?

  • Children can approach real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through daily life in the present and in the future.
  • Children are able to deal with more social and emotional barriers to learning and build their own confidence and self esteem
  • Disadvantaged and vulnerable children are empowered to overcome barriers they face and raise aspirations
  • Children have the skills to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs, practice self-care, manage risk and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them
  • From exposure to a range of global issues, children can build up a sense of responsibility of being a global citizen
  • Children are respectful of all individuals in society and towards those leading different lives to themselves.

How can parents help?

PSHE is all about making informed choices and parents can help their children with this in a range of ways. Areas include:

  • Healthy lifestyles: Ensure that your child has a balanced diet that includes 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, has 9 hours or more sleep each night, appropriate daily screen time for their age
  • Participating in exercise regularly
  • Understanding the qualities and impact of a good friend is
  • Knowing where to seek help if they are struggling with issues (friendships, school work, bullying)
  • Knowing how to be safe online
  • Encouraging your child’s independence in preparation for school and adult life (dressing themselves, packing their bags, road safety, cycle training)
